Keith Tonkin (GO), July 2001 "I answered Steve's call to act as results
co-ordinator for the SENiLe series. I moved South in the
late 80s with work and already had a keen interest in
night orienteering. I did not take much interest in the
first couple of years, weekends being spent travelling
North to visit relatives and friends, travelling
orienteering or decorating! However I did start to take
part in the SENiLe events the previous season and
volunteered to take over from Steve."
"The fixtures secretaries are usually very good
and scheduling events well in advance. Some seasons there
has been a little persuasion needed to get events in
place, not always successfully. The results are produced
using a spreadsheet; it's a little bit manual but means
that there is no complex database to manage. For the last
2 seasons I have been using email to distribute comments
and results during the season, and now that this website
is created, will use both the web and email to
communicate fixtures, results and league positions."
"It's been fairly uneventful whilst I have been
compiling the results each season. The popularity of
night orienteering appears to be declining slowly, and
those events that are being held are focussing to the
South and West of London. Some small changes have been
made to the format to try to make it easier to stage a
SENiLe event but perhaps more radical change is needed.
With only 4 fixtures planned for the 2001-2 season it may
be that the time for change is approaching. Comments from
night orienteers are always welcome."
